Goals
Describe a fair relationship.
Engage in fair relationships (win/win).
Avoid unfair relationships (win/lose or lose/lose).
What
A relationship is fair when it offers equal opportunities and outcomes based on relevant considerations and without bias.
Examples
I purchase something, and both the seller and I are satisfied with the exchange.
A couple spends time together in ways both perceive as mutually beneficial.
A parent and child negotiate boundaries that are appropriate for their roles and needs.
A team divides work so that each member feels the distribution is balanced and respectful.
Summary: The essence of fairness is that the parties perceive that they have gotten a just deal. In this context, we call a “just deal” a win for the party involved.
Rationale
Skill with fairness helps you:
Secure fair outcomes for yourself.
Avoid situations that are unfair—to you or to others.
