Elements of Design (Definition)

An element is an essential part of something such that this thing cannot exist without the element. For example, tires are an element of a car.

The essential elements of design are the things that a person needs to know and be able to do if they are going to be good at design.

Note: the elements of design are necessary for great design, but other details also need to be in place. However, taking care of the essentials with get one about 80% of the way there.
